Winter weather will soon be here and with it comes a myriad of skin concerns. Dryness is a key factor with winter skin.
With cooler temperatures, humidity drops. When the air outside is cold and dry, skin loses moisture much more quickly. Your skin can feel tight, dry, itchy, and flaky.
Turning on the heat in your home also contributes to dry, flaky winter skin. Heat dries out your skin, mucous membranes (lips, nose), and hair. You should set your heat at the lowest tolerable setting to have less impact on your body’s moisture levels.
Humidifiers are also a great way to help put moisture back into skin. My grandmother used to always have one running on her bedside table when she slept. It helps keep your skin moist and helps prevent sore noses and throats from overly dry air while you sleep.
Protect your skin if you do outdoor winter activities like skiing or sledding. The wind combined with cold temps can wreak havoc on delicate skin. Windburn can be painful and cause very dry, red, cracked skin. Keep skin covered as much as possible and use a barrier between your skin and the wind. Alastin’s Soothe and Protect Recovery Balm will help protect skin and leave it moisturized, soft, and smooth.
Try to avoid taking prolonged hot showers or baths. They pull moisture from the skin and make dryness worse. Try putting on a high quality body oil once you get out of the shower or tub. Moist skin helps drink in the oil and will help you maintain moisture throughout the day. Our favorite is OSEA Malibu’s Undaria Body Oil. It smells divine and gives your skin a beautiful glow.
Make sure you are well hydrated. Dehydration dries you from the inside out. Drink plenty of clean, filtered water throughout the day for your best winter skin.
Use medical grade skin care products on your face and neck. They are scientifically engineered to help prevent moisture loss, wrinkles, and premature aging. One of our favorites is Alastin’s Regenerating Skin Nectar. It is amazing for pre and post procedure like chemical peels or microneedling. It contains arnica for inflammation and feels like liquid velvet. There is a difference in what you can buy at Target and what you can buy from a medical spa or dermatologist. It is an investment in your skin. It will pay off all winter long while your skin glows!
