People become vegetarians or vegans for a multitude of reasons. These include animal rights, dietary restrictions because of health problems, and the devastating environmental impact of meat and dairy industries.
But what’s the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan? Here’s a little info to help sort you sort it out.
There are many types of vegetarians and I will touch briefly on them.
Vegans do not consume any animal products or foods that contain animal products. This is the strictest form of vegetarianism. It is also the most life-extending diet. This diet is high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals but low in iron. Women and athletes may need to take an iron supplement. Your physician can do a simple test to see if your iron levels are low. This diet requires constant reading of ingredient labels to ensure no animal products are consumed. Fresh, whole foods are your best and easiest way to avoid accidentally eating products containing hidden animal ingredients.
Strict vegetarians will consume a diet high in fruits, veggies, nuts, legumes, soy products like tofu, dairy and eggs. This diet is easier to follow than the vegan diet.
Lacto Vegetarians do not eat meat but they do consume dairy products like cheese and milk.
Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians do not eat meat but they consume dairy products and eggs.
Ovo Vegetarians do not eat meat or dairy but consume eggs and egg products.
